The Banfield Story

Banfield, The Pet Hospital, was founded by Warren J. Wegert, DVM in October of 1955 with a commitment to making human-quality medicine accessible to Pet owners. In our hometown of Portland, Oregon, Banfield became known for its legendary client service and life-saving veterinary medicine.

By the early 1990's, three generations of Pet owners had come to know and trust the Banfield team, making Banfield one of the most innovative and leading private veterinary practices in the nation.

Our practice's reputation for innovative and caring approaches to veterinary healthcare, under the leadership of Scott Campbell, DVM, led to a unique opportunity in 1993. PetSmart, the nation's largest retailer of Pet-related products and services, asked Dr. Campbell to bring high quality veterinary care to PetSmart customers by opening quality full-service Pet hospitals in many store locations.

This partnership fueled the rapid growth of our practice. Back then, PetSmart and 13 other veterinary groups also owned Pet clinics inside the store; these clinics were under the name PetSmart Veterinary Services. Effective July 4, 1999, Banfield began managing these 114 clinics and acquired them all in December of that year. Upon completion of this transition, with the support of our clients and dedicated team members, the practice became the exclusive provider of veterinary care inside PetSmart and the largest practice in the world.

By 2001, Banfield operated more than 300 hospitals, caring for over one million patients per year. By 2004, Banfield had enrolled more than one million Pets in our Optimum Wellness Plans. In early 2005, Banfield's 50th anniversary, the practice had grown to more than 500 hospitals - opening the 500th hospital in Broomfield, Colorado on October 25th.

Banfield, the Pet Hospital provides all the same medical systems, procedures and client service that have made us a critical part of the neighborhood for nearly five decades. Today, we're driven by the same goal that has always inspired us: making life better for families. We do this by giving Pets the same care we want for ourselves, making Pet health affordable, strengthening the value of Pets in families, teaching how better Pet care maximizes lives and stopping euthanasia by keeping Pets healthy. Put simply, treating your Pets like family.
