Banfield aims to reduce heartworm disease in Pets year-round
While a Pet’s risk of contracting the potentially-fatal heartworm disease increases during the spring and summer months, Banfield Pet hospital urges owners to keep their Pets on a monthly heartworm preventive year-round.
Heartworm is a serious disease that can affect both dogs and cats and can result from the bite of just one mosquito. Once infected, heartworm is caused by a parasite that matures into long worms that live in the heart and major vessels surrounding the heart. Implementing a year-round monthly heartworm preventive is crucial for minimizing Pets’ heartworm disease risk. The disease may not exhibit symptoms in the early stages, but if left undetected and untreated, it can cause sudden death. The treatment of adult heartworms in cats is usually not recommended, so prevention of the disease is particularly crucial for cats.
“Banfield is focused on preventive medicine and we always strive to educate our clients about measures they can take to ensure their Pets live a healthy and happy life,” said Elizabeth Lund, DVM, MPH, Ph.D., senior director of research at Banfield. “Whether Pet owners live in an area of the country most affected by heartworm, such as the southeastern United States, or in an area like the Pacific Northwest, where heartworm is not as common, preventive measures are crucial to ensuring that Pets don’t contract this life-threatening disease.”
The American Heartworm Society reports that the Mississippi Delta, South-central and Southeast regions of the United States have the greatest incidence of heartworm disease, although heartworm has been documented in all 50 states.
Before beginning treatment, Pets must undergo a blood screening for heartworm disease. If a Pet is enrolled in a Banfield Optimum Wellness Plan®, this test is part of the preventive care services included in the plan. Banfield urges Pet owners to bring their Pets in for a heartworm test and to learn more about prevention, and if applicable, the bets-suited treatment options for their Pets.
