Banfield encourages canine co-workers in honor of 'Take Your Dog to Work Day'

PORTLAND, Ore. – June 11, 2009 – Banfield, The Pet Hospital® encourages businesses to welcome four-legged family members into the workplace on Friday, June 26 in honor of “Take Your Pet to Work Day”—a nationally celebrated holiday.

Banfield’s main campus in Portland, Ore., is a leading advocate of canine co-workers. The Pet-friendly office welcomes up to 30 dogs on an average business day. By opening its front doors to associates’ Pets, Banfield leads the growing number of businesses that allow associates to bring their dogs to work.

“At Banfield, the presence of dogs on our main campus is a significant morale booster for our associates,” said Karen Faunt, DVM, MS, DACVIM, vice president and chief medical officer for Banfield, The Pet Hospital. “Creating a workplace that allows our associates to bring their Pets to work also supports the practice’s overall goal of strengthening the Pet-family bond on a daily basis.”

Banfield associates report that being able to have their dog with them at work contributes to their happiness, and helps reduce stress in the workplace. Banfield associates also report that the presence of Pets in the workplace increases morale, productivity, job performance and camaraderie.

In order to maintain appropriate workplace etiquette and minimize distractions to co-workers, Banfield recommends Pet owners leave behaviorally-challenged dogs— including overly-exuberant, timid and of course, aggressive dogs—at home. “While bringing a Pet to work is extremely rewarding for the owner, it also comes with a great amount of responsibility,” said Karen Johnson, DVM, vice president and client advocate for Banfield. “Pets, just like people, are unique and respond differently to new environments. We always want Pets to feel safe and comfortable and encourage people to consider their Pets individual needs when bringing them to the workplace.”

Dr. Johnson recommends the following tips for those considering bringing their Pet to work:
• Provide your dog with a break outside every couple of hours
• Make sure your Pet can attend any meetings scheduled during the day
• Bring plastic bags for cleaning up after Pets
• A bed, blanket or towel for your Pet to lie on will make them more comfortable
• Pack a mini-meal and snacks, if appropriate
• Favorite toys are fun for Pets as long as they don’t have squeakers
• Bring a sturdy leash for walking and, if necessary, for confining your Pet to a desk area
• Pack bite-size treats to reward good behavior
• Always have a water bowl with fresh water available
