Become a more responsible Pet owner in 2010

With the New Year in full swing, many of us are making resolutions to eat healthier, break negative habits or become more active. Why not make a resolution to be a more responsible Pet owner as well? From ensuring that your cat or dog gets proper exercise indoors and/or outdoors, to educating yourself about the ideal diet to feed your Pet, the options for ensuring that your Pet lives a long, healthy life are countless.

The most important step to being a responsible Pet owner begins before you even acquire your Pet. Consider carefully whether the breed or type of Pet you are considering fits with your lifestyle and/or current Pets. Each breed and Pet poses unique strengths, needs and challenges. Conduct research and be realistic with yourself about your ability to meet the needs of the Pet you are considering adopting. In addition, remember that your local Pet shelter is a great place to start your search. Many loving Pets reside in shelters, awaiting their forever home. Adopting a Pet is one way to help reduce Pet homelessness and euthanasia each year. To find a shelter near you, visit the Humane Society of the United States online.

If you already have a Pet, make a resolution to provide it with a better quality of life by ensuring proper preventive care (including at-home dental care), a high-quality diet, adequate identification (including a registered microchip), and last but not least, time to play and exercise with you and your family. Just as it does for humans, exercise and play provides much needed mental and physical health benefits.

If you have questions about how to improve your Pet’s health in 2010, schedule a visit with your local Banfield veterinarian.
