Client Information regarding recall of two lots of WORM SHIELD™

PORTLAND, Ore.--On Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009 Virbac, the manufacturer of WORM SHIELD™, a heartworm preventive medicine, voluntarily recalled two specific product lots. WORM SHIELD Small 0-25 lbs. (lot #090073) and WORM SHIELD Large 51-100 lbs. (lot #090095) were recalled due to efficacy issues.

The product was removed from our hospitals and we are working with clients to provide appropriate replacement product and heartworm testing when deemed medically necessary. The safety of Pets is our primary concern, and we are providing the highest quality of medical care to ensure Pets on the affected lots remain healthy and free of heartworm.

No adverse reactions or illnesses have been reported as a result of taking this product. Please check any WORM SHIELD product in your home to see if it contains one of the following lot numbers. If you have product with one of these lot numbers, please bring it to your Banfield hospital as soon as possible for a replacement six-month package of WORM SHIELD. The lot number is listed on the upper lid/flap of the box along the right-hand side in a white text field or on the “blister” package of the individual doses.

Affected product lots:
• WORM SHIELD Dogs Small 0-25 lbs., lot #090073
• WORM SHIELD Dogs Large 51-100 lbs., lot #090095

If your dog weighs 75 pounds or more, it may not be currently protected against heartworm. Banfield is asking that all owners who have a dog that weigh 75 pounds or more, schedule an appointment as soon as possible with your local Banfield for complimentary heartworm testing. Your dog will need to be tested again in five to six months after its last dose to ensure it was not infected. If your dog was infected, Banfield can begin treatment, which will be covered under the WORM SHIELD warranty.

Dogs that weigh less than 75 pounds are currently protected against heartworm, but the product may not work at acceptable levels through the expiration date. Banfield is asking that you please return any WORM SHIELD from the recalled lots as soon as possible so that your Banfield hospital team can replace it and ensure your Pet’s protection from heartworm infection. If you are concerned about your Pet’s health, please contact your Banfield veterinarian for further advice.

Clients who may have purchased one of the two recalled WORM SHIELD product lots should receive an automated phone call as well as a letter notifying them about the recall.

If you have moved recently, you can find a Banfield hospital near you by calling 1-800-768-8858 or visiting www.banfield.net.
