Coccidiosis, Coccidia

Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract caused by a microscopic organism. The disease generally spreads
from one Pet to another by contact with
stool (bowel movement) from infected individuals.

It is more severe in young or weakened Pets, and can cause signs like bloody diarrhea. In serious cases, severe diarrhea, blood loss, and dehydration can lead to death. Healthy adult Pets may often carry a small number of these organisms with no symptoms.

Diagnosis is based on microscopic examination of the stool.

Several medications exist for treatment. If dehydration, debilitation, or significant blood loss has occurred, hospitalization, fluid therapy and additional medications may be necessary.
