What your cat should not eat

It’s important to take into consideration your individual cat’s lifestyle, exercise habits, food sensitivities and your feeding routine when determining the proper diet for your furry friend. What is best for your cat may not be ideal for another cat, even if their lifestyles are very similar. Indoor cats may be especially prone to obesity, so special dietary considerations, portion control and increased activity may be required.

When your cat becomes a part of your family, let your Banfield veterinarian help determine which brand recommendations, portions and feeding schedules will keep your cat looking and feeling its best.
Sticking to a regular feeding schedule will help your cat maintain regular elimination habits and will help minimize digestive problems. In addition, make sure your kitty does not eat (or have unsupervised access to) the following:

• Plants, especially castor bean, foxglove, lily-of-the-valley, Japanese yew, oleander, azalea, rhododendron and hydrangea

• Flowers such as amaryllis, daffodils, iris, hyacinth and honeysuckle

• Chocolate

• Coffee

• Tea

• Baby food

• Grapes

• Raisins

• Onions or garlic

• Yeast dough

• Spinach

• Unripe tomatoes

A cat’s symptoms of ingesting a poisonous plant, flower or food can range from vomiting, to oral irritation, diarrhea, lethargy, liver failure, vomiting and even death. If you believe your cat has ingested one of these substances, call your Banfield veterinarian immediately.
