Banfield, The Pet Hospital Hosts Pet Healthcare Industry Summit
More than 100 veterinary leaders gather in Portland to discuss issues facing the
veterinary industry and profession
Portland, Ore. – August 27, 2008 – Hosted by Banfield, The Pet Hospital®, Pet healthcare leaders from around the world attended the seventh annual Pet Healthcare Industry Summit Aug. 19–21 in Portland, Ore. This annual event provides a collaborative environment for leaders from academia, government, industry, national veterinary organizations, private practice and shelters to tackle issues facing the industry and profession.
As “Partners in Innovation,” this year’s Summit attendees addressed key issues slowing the growth of the Pet healthcare industry and how collaboration can create new opportunities for all. The presentations and discussions focused on ways to improve veterinary capacity and productivity levels to meet the rising demands for Pet healthcare, increase the number of high-quality graduating veterinarians and reduce the veterinary student debt load. “Industry Summit provides an inspiring environment for key leaders to discuss important issues affecting the future of the profession,” said John Payne, Banfield’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “Those issues require creative solutions now to ensure we have qualified veterinarians to meet the increasing demand for Pet healthcare in the future.”
The recent opening of Banfield, The Pet Hospital of Western University in Pomona, Calif., illustrates how collaboration can lead to innovative solutions. “This partnership will provide students with the opportunity for a high-quality veterinary healthcare education in a state-of-the-art facility,” said Karen Faunt, DVM, MS, DACVIM Small Animal and Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Banfield, The Pet Hospital.
Attendees identified new ways to utilize data sharing throughout the industry and profession to solve problems. Sharing compiled Pet data can be used by veterinarians to identify disease, help counsel clients about preventive healthcare screenings and provide statistics to federal agencies for world-wide use, such as the Pet food recall in 2007.
Joseph T. Bielitzki, MS, DVM, Chief Operations Officer for LensAR, Inc., presented ideas for building the future of veterinary medicine through innovation and partnerships with industry to meet consumer needs. Ron DeHaven, DVM, CEO/Executive Vice President of the American Veterinary Medical Association spoke about the need for societal education about food animals and their welfare.
Banfield presented awards to several valued partners that help the practice continue to provide high-quality care to Pets. Award winners included:
Best Service Level: MWI Veterinary Supply
Best Educational Program: Bayer HealthCare and Royal Canin
Best Clinical Advancement: Pfizer Animal Health
Best New Product: Greenies Pill Pockets
Best Partnership: PetSmart
Industry Leadership Award: Shirley D. Johnston, DVM, PhD, Vice President for Advancement, Western University of Health Sciences
In conjunction with the Summit, the Banfield Charitable Trust hosted its annual dinner and auction that raised funds for scholarships and educational programs such as FutureVet, a national initiative encouraging students of all ages to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. This year, the auction raised more the $200,000 in donations.
